Great news for RA’s. The Veterans Administration hospitals are one step closer to employing RA’s.
On Valentine’s Day, members of the SRPE, ARRT, and ACR spoke with the National Radiology Program Director and Assistant Director of Diagnostic Services with the Veteran Health Administration. We were informed of the eight-step approval process for new positions in the VA. We were told that the request for the RA to be in the VA health system has been APPROVED. The next step in the process is for the qualification standards and functional statements, which have been written and submitted to the VA Program Offices, must be reviewed by the labor organizations for comments. Once the standards are approved, the finalized document will be made public and the local VA facility’s Human Resources Departments will be able to start hiring RAs.

The coalition also had a conference call with CMS to again explain the issues with the supervision levels and recognition with Medicare. We reiterated that the lack of recognition and stringent supervision levels were a regulatory burden to RAs, radiology groups, and patients. We again asked CMS for a mechanism to allow for RAs to perform procedures on Medicare patients, according to state supervision levels, and to include this in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Proposed Rule for FY 2019.

The SRPE is tirelessly working from many directions for all RAs to secure our future in healthcare. We are vigilant in watching not only our federal legislation but at the state legislative and regulatory levels. We continue to call for CMS to reduce regulatory burden and allow radiologists to use the RA to best fit their practice.

I would like to ask that RAs to contact their Congressperson to tell them about the VA’s approval of the RA job position. Also please have everyone do another push for MARCA by writing in the ASRT Advocacy Center.
